ProAmpac, a leader in flexible packaging and material science, has introduced its fiber-based Modified Atmosphere Packaging RAP Sandwich Wedge to the North American market. Designed for sandwiches and wraps, this groundbreaking package introduces the concept of modified atmosphere packaging to a fiber-based format.

By combining the benefits of modified atmosphere packaging with sustainable fiber materials, ProAmpac addresses the demand for reduced food spoilage, environmentally friendly packaging, and an enhanced consumer experience in the food-to-go market. With the capability to keep a fresh sandwich or wrap preserved for up to 28 days, ProAmpac’s RAP Sandwich wedge is a pioneering approach that sets a new standard for freshness and sustainability in on-the-go meals.

"Sustainability lies at the heart of ProAmpac's business strategy, and we are thrilled to unveil the fiber-based Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP) RAP Sandwich Wedge," said Irma Randles, ProAmpac's market manager for Fresh Food To-Go. "Our packaging solution represents a more sustainable alternative to conventional plastic sandwich packs while reducing food spoilage costs."

ProAmpac's RAP Sandwich Wedge incorporates a carton board structure with a thin film lining to optimize product preservation and visibility. Engineered for hermeticity, this innovative solution utilizes high barrier technology to extend product shelf-life, especially when incorporated with gas-flush filling technology. The RAP Sandwich Wedge enables longer transit and selling time, enhancing sales potential while minimizing food waste.

Mondi and Baumit Launch Water-Soluble Bag for Dry Mortar

Mondi, a global leader in sustainable packaging and paper, is introducing SolmixBag, a water-soluble bag for the construction industry.

SolmixBag is a one-ply paper bag created to store and transport dry construction materials such as cement and dry mix mortar products. It’s designed to dissolve when getting in contact with water during the mixing process - the fiber of the packaging simply integrates with the product as it is mixed. This eliminates waste, reduces paper waste management costs and minimizes dust on the construction site, as the bag is simply placed into the mixer without the necessity to open it up front.

The bag is produced in-house thanks to the company’s uniquely integrated value chain: SolmixBag is created from Mondi’s water-soluble sack kraft paper and uses 20% less paper than the industry standard 2-ply paper bags. The solution is able to run on existing filling machines, and it is available in standard sizes, offering customers a smooth transition from their existing solutions. SolmixBag provides the same strength and shelf-life as its predecessors, with good printing results for a quality, stand-out appearance on shelf.

Mondi has worked with its long-standing customer Baumit to bring SolmixBag to market for dry mix concrete. The two organizations collaborated closely throughout the product development and are committed to supporting the whole construction industry as it endeavors to reduce waste.

Dow, P&G China Unveil Easily Recyclable Air Capsule e-commerce Packaging

Dow, a global materials science company, today announced its collaboration with Procter & Gamble China (P&G China) for an air capsule e-commerce packaging. The air capsule, enabled by P&G China’s innovation and Dow’s materials, aims to deliver an effective and efficient way to protect products while avoiding excessive packaging in e-commerce and facilitating recyclability.

The air capsule packaging is a significant milestone in advancing sustainability for the e-commerce industry, offering benefits such as:

  • Reduction of >40% in material weight compared to traditional corrugated parcel boxes, thus requiring only 25% of original trucking and 75% less warehouse space
  • Safe and reliable cushion protection
  • Enabling recyclability through an all-PE mono material structure

The packaging design is also reliable and convenient for consumers, with features such as a tamper-free opening for content integrity, an easy-to-tear strip, and an auto-deflate feature for hassle-free disposal after opening.

“The rise of e-commerce has inevitably generated an increase in packaging waste. At Dow, our role is to develop materials that enable better performing, sustainable packaging that is designed for recyclability from the start. Through our collaboration with P&G China, we not only meet the needs of consumer brands and e-retailers, but also enable consumers to do their part with materials that close the loop on packaging waste,” said Bambang Candra, Asia Pacific commercial vice president, Dow Packaging & Specialty Plastics.
