Recycle-Ready Mono-Material Pouch Laminates
Saica Flex, the flexible packaging division of Saica Group, has developed a new range of recycle-ready mono-material pouch laminates that offer the possibility of using more than 50% recycled materials in its production for non-food contact applications. The new pouch laminate is 100% PE-based mono-material and designed to be recycled according to CEFLEX and PRE (Plastics Recyclers Europe) guidelines. This reportedly represents the first mono-material recycle-ready pouch where virgin resin has been replaced by recycled resin in a rate greater than 50% of the total weight of the pack. Saica Natur, the business division of Saica Group in charge of waste management and environmental services, produces the recycled PE resin.

Quesada Burritos & Tacos Phases Out Aluminum Foil
Quesada Burritos & Tacos will become Canada's first Mexican chain to phase out foil and package its burritos using biodegradable paper. This translates to diverting about 100,000 pounds of aluminum, or 12.5 million foil wraps, from landfills over the next five years, according to Quesada Burritos & Tacos. Aluminum takes about 400 years to break down and one ton of it takes about 170 million BTUs to produce — or approximately 1,400 gallons of gasoline — and emits about 12 tons of greenhouse gases. Quesada donates 1% of sales of its Beyond Meat burrito to support the David Suzuki Foundation.

Flexible Packer for Cans
The KHS Group announced its new Innopack Kisters Wrap-aroundShrinkPaperPacker Advanced (WSPP A) — a beverage can packaging machine that can handle wraparound packs, trays, pads, paper or film. The machine packages cylindrical containers, especially beverage cans, whose compact shape and even surface make them suitable for wrapping in paper. According to KHS, most machine users see the paper wrapping as an additional new option to package their range of products. The unwinding and cutting unit previously used for the shrink film was given a connecting unit for paper and film. This section of the machine is also where hot melt is applied from below and the paper is pulled taut. These functions are deactivated when shrink film is processed.

Continuous Labeling Capabilities
HERMA US Inc., the subsidiary of HERMA GmbH, a Germany-based provider of labeling machinery and self-adhesive labels and materials, introduced continuous labeling capabilities for its 132M HC Wrap-around Labeler. With the new EasySplicer and EasyCutter modules, label reels can be changed and the backing paper reels disposed of without the machine coming to a standstill. Since the EasySplicer is equipped with a label buffer, the labeler will continue to run even when it reaches the end of the label web. The EasyCutter vacuums up the empty backing paper and chops it into shreds that are collected automatically and can be recycled. The add-on eliminates the need for manual removal of rewinded backing paper.
